From the archive – Part 8: Puma Diego Maradona moulded

February 13, 2018

As regular or long-time readers of this blog may know that we used to have an image gallery/repository based website hosted by the now defunct . When they went belly up we, like many other users, lost access to hundreds of images that we’d collected over the years. Thankfully, a fair while after we received an email out of the blue stating that we were able to regain access to the files that we had posted on our old site and that we had resigned to never seeing again. So, we followed their instructions and managed to get hold of most of our old files. Rather than risk losing them again we transferred them to various CD’s and an external hard drive for safe keeping. Then somewhere in the months and years that followed we lost track of where these back-up CD’s and hard drive were kept… Until this week when we stumbled across them whilst searching for something else completely unrelated to this site. Now that it is back in our hands we plan on sharing their contents again and we’re starting off these Puma Diego Maradona mouldeds. These image were previously posted on our old site but hopefully they are new to some visitors of this blog.

Being of a certain age and traditionalists we love the simplicity of these boots. Plain black leather with a contrasting white form stripe. You just know that after a few wears, polishes and some application of dubbin that these would have softened up a treat! They also feature a one colour sole unit with rubber studs in a nice gum colour. We always found that this type of sole unit always aged really well.

The only thing that we’d love to have seen on these is the traditional white tongue top that Puma used extensively in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. However, this omission is easily forgiven as the print of Maradona’s face on the tongue is fantastic. adidas also used images of their sponsored players on some of their boot tongues including Beckenbauer, Trevor Francis and others and, of course, they also used this style on their Stan Smith, Illie Nastase and Rod Laver trainers from the same time period.

This is a boot that we’d be happy to wear today and can imagine that the moulded sole on these would be great on a modern 4G pitch. So, if anyone ever sees a pair of these in UK11 or UK11.5 then drop us a line please!

Boot Room Weekly Round Up – Issue 6

February 8, 2018

bt rm wkly rnd up

And still we keep up our New Years Resolution of regularly posting new content to this site. Apologies if the following post appears a bit Nike heavy but it could be argued that they ‘won’ this week with some very strong product launches. Anyway, here’s issue 6 of the Boot Room Weekly Round Up – enjoy, share, like, comment etc!

New boot of the week: Nike Mercurial Superfly 360 – RRP £229.95

It’s pretty hard to imagine a more star studded launch event than the one that Nike held for the latest incarnation of their Mercurial boot. Nike endorsed players such as Manu Lanzini, Joao Mario, Alexis Sanchez, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Marcus Rashford, Raheem Sterling, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jordan Henderson and Eden Hazard were all in attendance along with Brazilian legends Neymar Jr and Ronaldo to announce the latest version on Nike’s premium speed boot. Amazingly these boots don’t have a soleplate instead Nike FlyKnit technology wraps the entire foot. According to Nike, this ensures a hug like fit that eliminates any gaps between the foot and soleplate and thereby reducing the chance of any slipping inside. If the fit is right and the foot can’t slip then the players speed is not compromised.

The ‘sole’ of the boot is visually stunning but does a lack of a traditional soleplate affect the traction that the boot offers? No is the answer from Nike. Traction is provided by precisely placed studs in the forefoot and heel. The Nike designers looked to the natural world for inspiration – in particular Cheetahs. The forefoot is built for acceleration in any direction while the heel studs help the player stop.

Here Jeongwoo Lee, Nike Football Senior Design Director, explains the design process behind the new Mercurial 360.

Expect to see the top Nike endorsed players sporting these boots this coming weekend,  ahead of them going on sale at on Wednesday 14th February.

Vintage boot of the week: Nike Air GX FG US10.5 UK9.5 – Buy it Now $149.00 or Best Offer

Quite how these boots still haven’t sold on eBay despite them being listed a number of times is beyond us…maybe its to do with them being mistakenly listed as Nike Air Roma. These boots, released in 1997, were the direct inspiration for the Nike Hypervenom III GX that were released earlier this season.

The Air GX even featured on a track on a Nike Promotional CD of Mo Wax produced tunes inspired by various Nike shoes of the time. We’ve still got a copy somewhere… but in the meantime here’s the Nike GX track

Vintage shirt of the week –  adiads Anderlecht shirt 1990-1992

The purple and the stylised G logo of sponsor Generale Bank makes this instantly recognisable from quite some distance as an Anderlecht shirt to those of us of a certain age bracket. The one thing that’s always bothered us though is that the adidas trefoil logo sits over the heart and not the club badge…

Bargains of the week – adidas Predator Precision SG UK 10   £95 Buy it Now or Best Offer

We’d normally use this section to highlight sale bargains on brand new boots from various websites but thought these still qualify as a bargain. With a Buy It Now price of £95 these are a good price but with the added temptation that the seller is willing to listen to offers then you could pick these up for even less. Yes, they could do with a bit of restoration work but they look like they are in pretty good condition. eBay also has a few packs of replacement studs on there at the moment along with the special stud key that’s needed.

Video of the week – Nutmeg! Nuts! Megs! Megnuts! Túnel! Panna! Caño! Tunnel!

Image of the week:

There’s just so much right with this pic of Joël Tanter of FC Rouen. The pinstripe shirt, oversized sponsor, the adidas trefoil, the beard, the hair and the seemingly unflinchingly stare!

eBay finds of the week

We’d love to own this Roy Race cut-out but not sure our other half would be quite so keen…

Pick-ups of the week

  • Vintage Roy of the Rovers pin badge – this badge highlights the ground breaking sponsorship deal that Gola secured with the mighty Melchester Rovers in 1981 and takes us right back to popping to the newsagents every Saturday morning to pick up our reserved copy of the latest issue of Roy of the Rovers.

rotr pin

  • Vintage Fiorentina shirt by ABM – We’ve always had a soft spot for Italian team shirts and this Viola shirt was just too good and too much of a bargain to let slip through our hands. Better pictures to follow when it actually arrives…

This weeks other worthy mentions:

  • FC Dallas of the MLS unveiled this beauty of a home kit. The shirt is meant to invoke the look and style of the Texas state flag. A great little detail is the white star on the left sleeve that features the initials ‘LH’ as a tribute to team founder Lamar Hunt and also as another nod to the state flag.
  • This was definitely a week for MLS kit launches – another one that caught our eye was the New York City away shirt

  • The kits for this summers World Cup are now starting to come thick and fast. This week saw both the England and Nigeria kit launch. Clearly taking inspiration from their 1994 World Cup shirt the Nigeria one is stunning.

The bucket hat and floral track top are also superb!

We were a little less impressed with the England efforts, as nice and traditional as they are, but we do think that Nike missed a trick in not making the training shirt the playing shirt. With echoes of the 1982 admiral shirt, we’re sure that this will prove very popular among the England support

  • If you’re on Instagram then take a look at the One Shilling account page for some great images of exquisite Football Programmes from a humbler time

Boot Room Weekly Round Up – Issue 5

February 2, 2018

bt rm wkly rnd up

Well it was a mad rush to try and get this issue (number 5!) of our Weekly Round-Up out on time (at least before the end of the week anyway!). Please forgive any typo’s, errors and other cock-ups…

New boot of the week: Nike Fast AF pack

There doesn’t seem to be a week go by these days without the launch of a new colourway or ‘pack’. Back in the day brands launched their range of new boots for the season ahead in the summer. Now it feels like a new pack is released every month…possibly even more frequently.

This week saw the launch of the Nike AF pack across the Hypervenom, Magista and Tiempo silos. All 3 ranges have been reworked in an understated charcoal grey with Total Orange flashes

Hypervenom Phantom III

Magista Obra II

Tiempo Legend VII – Our personal favourites of the AF pack
All of the above boots and more from the new Nike Fast AF pack is available to order now from Lovell Soccer

Vintage boot of the week: No selection this week… back next week 😉

Vintage shirt of the week –  Unknown German/Swiss club – Erima

The muscle car sponsor on this Erima shirt from an unknown German/Swiss club makes this shirt.

Bargains of the week – Puma EvoPower 2.3 – Was £100 Now £20

One for the big foots out there… these Puma EvoPower 2.3 in UK12 are just £20.00 – reduced from £100.00 – a saving of 80%

adidas Ace 16.1 FG Primeknit and SG Primeknit – Was £200 – Now £60

Lovell Soccer have got both the adidas Ace 16.1 FG Primeknit and SG Primeknit available in a good size range for the bargain price of just £60 instead of their RRP of £200

Video of the week – Diego Armando Maradona… enough said!

Image of the week:

Just look at this early 1980’s shot of Paulo Roberto Falcão from his days at AS Roma. There’s just so much right about this image – the kit, the ball, the hair, the Collisseum in the back ground…we love it!

eBay finds of the week

Nothing this week as we’ve been too busy with other stuff to scour eBay!

Pick-ups of the week

  • Nike Footwear Catalogue – Fall 1999
  • Nike Footwear Catalogue – Fall 2001
  • Nike Footwear Catalogue – Spring 2003

In the coming weeks we’ll be sharing some more detailed pics/scans from each of these catalogues so stay tuned!

This weeks other worthy mentions:

  • Sky’s coverage of the transfer deadline day –  Jim White once again donned his yellow tie and his female co-presenters were bedecked in matching yellow dresses. As always, we were sucked in to watching right to the dramatic ‘slamming shut’ of the window and once again it was all a bit uneventful for our teams and a bit of an anticlimax…

  • West Bromwich Albion will wear specially embroidered shirts this weekend to commemorate the passing of Cyrille Regis. These will be auctioned off after the game to raise funds for charity.

Boot Room Weekly Round Up – Issue 4

January 24, 2018

Here’s issue 4 of the Boot Room Weekly Round-Up:

New boot of the week: Puma One 18.1 – RRP £180 – £190 (depending on sole choice)

Puma has recently launched their new Puma One boot in a traditional looking Black/Silver/Red colourway. With these boots Puma aim to deliver the 3 F’s of Fit, Fast and Feel. The stretch evoKnit sock provides support and a snug FIT. The FAST element is delivered by the lightness of the boot and the bladed and conical studded sole units and the super soft kangaroo leather provides the FEEL. Our only gripe with these is that in our opinion the Puma Formstripe logo is just a little too short and needs to come a little further down the boot…but that’s just a tiny niggle.

These will be worn by the likes of Sergio Aguero, Hector Bellerin and Olivier Giroud. Aguero debuted the One 18.1 in spectacular fashion last week by scoring a hat-trick against Newcastle United.

Available to pre-order now from ProDirect Soccer in various sole units

Vintage boot of the week: Patrick Michel Platini

Much like the Puma Step Star from a recent issue of the Round Up the Patrick Michel Platini were another pair of boots that were highly sought after in our school days. Patrick was a relative newcomer to the UK football boot market and at the time they represented something a bit different to the ubiquitous adidas or Puma boots. We’d seen Patrick boots adorning the feet of Kevin Keegan in the late 70’s but it wasn’t until the Casual boom of the early to mid-80s that Patrick really gained some serious brand recognition. Patrick cagoules, Patrick squash shoes and the Patrick Liverpool endorsed indoor football shoes were all desirable items at our school and as such the boots carried some kudos. Add to this the fact that arguably the worlds best footballer was wearing them helped make them even more sought after.

Despite Keegan being less than complimentary about Patrick boots in his autobiography  – claiming that he only wore them for the money and wasn’t a big fan of them – these Platini endorsed boots were a cut above any of their other offerings. They were made with super soft leather and the flashes of white along the eyestays , the red arches, the distinctive heel branding and the white indents on the tongue were all distinguishing features of this great boot that ensured that they stood out on the shelves of your local sports shop, in the changing rooms and on the pitch.

If we recall correctly, one real drawback of these and other Patrick boots was that they had their own stud fixings and that normal studs didn’t fit – you had to buy Patrick branded studs if you needed to replace any.

Vintage shirt of the week –  Le Coq Sportif AS Saint Etienne Home shirt – 1981-84 – €90 Buy It Now

Whenever we see this shirt our mind immediately sees Platini (see the pics below) in his pomp. ‘Les Verts’ have had numerous great kits across their history but this one just edges the tricolore trimmed one from the late 70’s for us. At the time, and arguably still now, this shirt reeks of continental style and glamour – the contrast filled collar, the double pinstripe hoops, the ‘cotton’ type fabric used and the oversized felt flock sponsor just all work so well together.

Bargains of the week – Puma evoSPEED SL AG – Was £159.99 Now £22.99

Offering an amazing 85% saving on the RRP, these Puma evoSPEEDs provide great value for money. These would be a decent boot for someone looking for a decent pair of mouldeds for use on hard ground or artificial surfaces. There’s still a decent size run of these available on MandMDirect but be quick as we doubt they will hang around for long at this price!

2016/17 AC Fiorentina Goalkeepers Shirts – Pro version – RRP £109.99 NOW £24.99

The guys at ClassicFootballShirts have just taken delivery of a range of  AC Fiorentina gear from Le Coq Sportif and in our opinion these goalkeeper shirts are the pick of the bunch.  Don’t forget you can save a further 10% off your order with ClassicFootballShirts by entering code CFSPJ10 at the checkout.

Video of the week – Ronaldinho playing beach volleyball and making it look easy!

Images of the week:

The folk at British Culture Archive this week shared these 97 recently discovered images of Manchester City and Manchester United fans from around 1977. The pictures were taken by little known photographer Iain S P Reid and they really capture the time. Some of our favourites are shown below but we recommend that you take the time to view the whole lot here!

eBay finds of the week

  • In the days before home video tapes, DVD;s and YouTube if you wanted to relive your teams glory moments you either had to wait for one of the 3 TV stations to show the game for some reason in their schedule, which very rarely, if at all, ever happened, the only real alternative was to listen to the match commentary on vinyl. We’ve been searching for a couple of games recently, to no avail, but have found these ones…

1970 Chelsea vs Leeds Utd

1972 Arsenal vs Leeds Utd

1974 Liverpool vs Newcastle Utd

1977 FA Cup Final Manchester Utd vs Liverpool

1978 FA Cup Final – Ipswich vs Arsenal

Pick-ups of the week – Here’s what arrived at Boot Room Towers this week.

  • Juventus away shirt 2016/17 – we actually purchased this before Christmas and it’s only just turned up and it’s too big… 😦 Let us know if you’ve been after this shirt in XL.

This weeks other worthy mentions:

  • Oh dear Leeds United…what were you thinking? Fair play for acting so swiftly to the criticism and ridicule by agreeing to reconsider this design. Just don’t mess it up this time…

6 of the best vintage football shirts on eBay right now!

January 24, 2018

Wow! So far January is proving to be quite a prolific posting month for us. We’re striking whilst the iron is hot and making sure that we take advantage of this new found discipline in creating content for this site.

Here’s our selection of 6 of what we consider to be the best vintage football shirts on eBay right now. Our standard disclaimer that none of these auctions have anything to do with us at The Boot Room applies!

2.  Umbro Everton 1986-89 Home shirt – 38/40 – Starting bid €9.99 (approx £8.80)

3.  adidas Kansas City Wizards Rainbow shirt Medium – $104.99 (approx £76) Buy It Now

6 of the best vintage boots on eBay right now!

January 22, 2018

Here’s the first 2018 edition of our long standing ‘6 of the best’ style posts with this one focusing on vintage boots. We’ve pored over the current eBay listings to bring you, in our opinion, 6 of the best vintage boots on eBay right now.

As always, apologies if we’ve drawn attention to any listing you were hoping to grab unnoticed!

1. Le Coq Sportif FV3000 (?) – UK8 – Starting bid £49.99

2. adidas Equipment Soccer Soft Ground – UK6 – €125 Buy It Now (approx £110)

3. adidas World Champion – Size 6 – Starting price £75.00

At first glance these look like a pair of World Cup’s but with a different name however, a closer look shows that they have a slightly different toe box.  The stitching across the toe looks like it could even be extra layers of leather (if that makes sense?)

4. Nike Air GX FG (listed incorrectly as Air Roma) UK 9.5 US 10.5 – Buy It Now $149 (approx £107) or Best Offer

5. adidas Questra Finale SG – UK 10.5 – £50.00 Buy It Now or Best Offer

These are used but look to be in fantastic condition considering their age.

6. Valsport Azteca – Made in Italy – EU40 or EU43 – €95.20 (approx £84) Buy It Now

As always, none of the above have anything to do with us here at The Boot Room. Please also bear in mind that materials can degrade over time and so the boots shown above may not be in wearable condition.

Happy bidding!

Boot Room Weekly Round Up – Issue 3

January 18, 2018

bt rm wkly rnd up

With this being our 3rd post in as many weeks we must be closing in on some kind of consistent posting record for us… long may it continue! All we need now are a few more readers 😉

Anyway, enough of our self congratulatory ‘pat on the back’ nonsense here’s this weeks round up. Enjoy!

New boot of the week: adidas COPA 18.1 – £170

adidas has just launched their latest incarnation of the new Copa. As the name suggests these are inspired/influenced by the best selling boot of all time – the Copa Mundial.

This latest version of the COPA combines the upper from the COPA17 but with the addition of a new sock like collar that also incorporates a fold over tongue. The boot also features a premium K-leather upper ensuring great ball feel, touch and comfort.
Available to pre-order now from Lovell Soccer in a white and black colourway and also a more traditional and in our opinion better looking black, white and red.

Vintage boot of the week:

Vintage shirt of the week –  HUMMEL SOUTHAMPTON AWAY SHIRT – 1987 – MEDIUM – £79.99 Buy It Now

Southampton seem to be a club that either have stunning shirts or downright disasters. Alongside the mid 1970’s Admiral shirts and their early 80’s Patrick efforts, this Hummel away effort they sported from 1987-89 is, in our opinion, a thing of beauty.  This template (or very similar) was also worn by Linfield FC as their home kit and also by Real Madrid as an away kit.

Bargain of the week – adidas ace 17+ Pure Control FG – Was £230 Now £120

These represent a 48% saving on the RRP for this top level boot from adidas’ recent Turbocharge pack. Lovell currently have a good size run of these but at this price we expect sizes to start selling out soon… so you might have to be quick! Our size is already gone …

Video of the week – Ronaldinho’s amazing touch and nutmeg

Since the news broke about Ronaldinho hanging up his golden boots we’ve been watching this clip almost continuously… what a touch and then a cheeky nutmeg – class!

Image of the week:

On Monday of this week we were shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of West Bromwich Albion legend Cyrille Regis at the age of just 59. Regis was a true trail blazer and plied his trade at a time when racism in football was probably at its peak. Just before he made his England debut in 1982 he received a bullet in the post but he never let it faze him and he later said “I kept it as a reminder of the evil some people had inside them. For the rest of my playing days, it was a motivation that they weren’t going to stop me”. Quite how this powerhouse of a centre forward only won 5 England caps and never played a full 90 minutes for the national side is beyond us. Rest in Peace Cyrille.

Liam Rosenior penned a very moving letter to Cyrille Regis – we highly recommend that you take a few minutes out of your day to have a read and see just what Cyrille Regis meant to the generations of black footballers who have followed in his footsteps.

And the inimitable David Squires commemorated the big man in his own perfect style here

Pick-ups of the week – Another light week for pick ups…

This weeks other worthy mentions:

  • Thanks to the guys at SoccerBible for bringing Italian tattoo artist Alberto Marzari to our attention. He’s been inking folk across Rome with stunning depictions of boots and trainers – you can see his work here and his Instagram feed here

copa tattoo

  • This film from the guys at COPA90 shows how former Norwich City striker Leon McKenzie literally fought his way back from his hidden depression even attempting suicide. We learnt that suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK – 16 people take their lives every day – that’s one man every 90 minutes… If you are affected by depression, anxiety or any mental health issues, either personally or maybe via a friend or loved one please talk to someone or reach out to those who you think may be suffering. It may not be easy but please give it a try.

Finally, a little more self promotion to finish up with… we now have 993 twitter followers! It would be great if we could get over the 1000 follower barrier. Little did we know all those years ago when we started this project, pretty much just for ourselves, on the now defunct website that we’d be reaching so many folk – thank you!

Boot Room Weekly Round Up – Issue 2

January 11, 2018

bt rm wkly rnd up

We realise that our first weekly round-up was published earlier this week but we’re sticking this one up now as this (Thursday) is likely to be the regular publication day for all future issues of the Round Up.

New boot of the week: Nike Premier II – £90 from ProDirectSoccer

The Nike Premier II is an update of the stunning Nike Premier released in 2013. Based on the iconic Nike Tiempo Premier the Premier II features super soft kangaroo leather and a fold over tongue. The Racer Blue/White colourway shown here is exclusive to ProDirectSoccer

Like many boots these days the Premier II is also available in other colourways:

University Red/White and White/Racer Blue

Or for the more traditionally minded amongst us… Black/White, Black/Black and Black Gamma Blue, Black/Orange and our personal favourite Black/Volt – all of which are available from ProDirectSoccer at various prices.

Vintage boot of the week: Lotto Stadio

Another long time favourite of us here at The Boot Room and one that we constantly search for. Unfortunately Lotto have decided to completely redesign the Stadio and to be honest its not a patch on its predecessor that was favoured by many pro’s including Ruud Gullit and Gheorghe Hagi. Not seen as commonly on this side of the Channel the Stadio’s always exuded continental flair. If anyone ever comes across these in UK11 or above then give us a shout please!

Vintage shirt of the week –  1985-86 Everton Le Coq Sportif away shirt – £25.00 Buy It Now

Quite how this shirt from the days of Kevin Ratcliffe, Derek Mountfield and Adrian ‘Inchy’ Heath, hasn’t been snapped up yet is beyond us but hey, that’s how it goes on eBay sometimes…

Bargain of the week – adidas Nemeziz 17.1 FG – RRP £219.95 Now £100.00

This is a worthwhile 55% saving off the RRP of the original colourway of the Nemeziz – good size availability (at time of writing!) from The GAA Store

Video of the week – Gazza

The return of the mercurial Paul Gascoigne to twitter brought a smile to our faces and had us diving into YouTube to remind us just how much of a talent Gazza was. Here’s hoping he stays fit and well this time.

Image of the week:

Marcello Lippi in his Sampdoria playing days – just look at that shirt – the rich royal blue , the iconic striping detail across the chest, stunning simplistic badge placed centrally, polo shirt style placket and collars and not a sponsor or manufacturers logo to be seen – BEAUTIFUL or rather BELLISIMO!

eBay find of the week – Vintage Subbuteo catalogues

These mid 1970’s Subbuteo catalogues that fold out to show all the teams available look great framed. There are usually plenty available on eBay at decent prices (between £3-£10)

Pick-ups of the week – As we’re still feeling the pinch after our Xmas and New Year excesses our pickups have been a little light this week…

  • Resubscribed to the excellent Mundial magazine for another 4 issues

This weeks worthy mentions:

  • Real Sociedad have announced that as of next season they’ll be switching kit suppliers from adidas to Macron – looks like we may soon be seeing a load of Sociedad gear in the ClassicFootballShirts clearance section – the home shirt is a beuty. Don’t forget to enter code CFSPJ10 to save an extra 10% on your next order! RS adi 1718

  • UNAM Pumas of Mexico announced their new kit – we’ve always had a soft spot for their puma face chest logo and this kit doesn’t disappoint
